Our Story

My name is Melissa Medlin, and I am a mother of four beautiful children. Dajon, my oldest of the four, decided that after he graduated from high school, he wanted to go to college to become a fashion designer and one day own his own clothing line, Element King. I fully supported him, as he was extremely talented. After some discussion about college, Dajon decided to enroll in the fashion design program at Phoenix College. The same college I graduated from in 2012 with degrees in Criminal Justice and Forensic Evidence. On May 16, 2016, three days after the last day of high school, and three days before his graduation, the unthinkable happened. Dajon became stuck in a shed at a friend’s house and tried to get out of a window after breaking it. The broken glass cut a main artery in his arm as he tried to get out, and lost his life as a result of that injury. He was 19.

As a parent, I never imagined I would be in a position to have to lay my child to rest. Especially a child with a beautiful soul, who touched so many lives, with so much talent and promise. A child who not only had dreams and goals of owning his own clothing line business, but also had a plan in place to make them happen. After he died I had a choice. I could choose to wither away into the darkness of depression, and let his dream die with him, or to remain in the light so that the memory of him could be seen and his dream could become reality. I made the choice to not allow his dream to die with him. I decided to pursue his dream of having his own clothing line and officially became Element Kings Clothing on September 30, 2016.

I kept the name Dajon chose, “Element King”, but added an “s” on the end to encompass all of us that must overcome the elements of life. When I created the logo, I thought about what I wanted it to mean, what I wanted it to symbolize, what my son wanted it to symbolize. The lion is the king of the jungle. The lion is a symbol of bravery, courage and strength. The elements are behind it for a reason. Do not let obstacles (elements) of life overcome you. The bravery, courage, and strength within you is stronger than anything you have to face, anything you have to endure or overcome. That’s how I want people to feel when they wear my son’s brand, OUR brand. I am doing this for him.

“Braving the elements of life, one style at a time.”
